Important Notice: Microsoft Security Update May Affect SambaBox Environments

Microsoft released a security update on 8 July 2025 that changes the RPC Netlogon protocol, potentially affecting environments running SambaBox 5.1.

Microsoft has released an important security update on 8th July 2025, which changes the Microsoft RPC Netlogon protocol to improve security by tightening access checks for certain RPC requests.

Who is Affected?

Your SambaBox environment may be impacted if you are using SambaBox 5.1 servers working in hybrid environments with Windows Server 2008 and prior.

Current SambaBox versions (5.1) require an update, as improved security affects configuration and clients may stop functioning properly after applying the Microsoft update.

In such cases, users will no longer be able to connect to the SMB services provided by SambaBox for any domain configured.

What Action is Required?

  • Existing SambaBox 5.1 installations will receive a patch to resolve this issue. The patch is currently ready as version 5.2.
  • Keep an eye out for SambaBox updates and apply them before deploying Microsoft’s security update.

For New Installations

A new SambaBox ISO image including the necessary updates will be released in September 2025. New SambaBox installations deployed from this ISO will not require additional action for this Microsoft change. Until then, you need to apply the 5.2 patch before joining a new SambaBox to the domain.
