DNS Server Information

SambaBox also serves as a DNS server in the network where it is located.

DNS Server Information

The following options are configured on this screen:

DC Type

Defines which type of domain controller SambaBox will run as after the migration:

  • WRDC (Writable Domain Controller): A standard domain controller with full privileges. It can read and write directory data.

  • RODC (Read-Only Domain Controller): A domain controller with read-only access. It is suitable for environments where physical security cannot be fully ensured, such as branch offices. An RODC can only read directory data; write operations are referred to a writable domain controller. After the migration, you can manage the passwords to be cached on the RODC from the RODC Preload page.

Directory Topology

You can choose between STAR and HUB-SPOKE topologies and sambabox will register DNS records accordingly.

Hint

STAR and HUB-SPOKE are network topologies with distinct structures. STAR features a central hub connecting to multiple endpoints directly, making communication efficient but reliant on the hub’s stability. In contrast, HUB-SPOKE has a central hub linking to spokes, allowing efficient hub-to-spoke communication but requiring data to pass through the hub for spoke-to-spoke connections, potentially creating bottlenecks. STAR is ideal for centralized control and quick hub-to-endpoint communication, while HUB-SPOKE suits scenarios where hub-to-spoke communication predominates, accepting some hub-centric limitations. The choice depends on the specific network needs, emphasizing centralized control and speed (STAR) or optimized communication among spokes (HUB-SPOKE).

DNS Forwarders

The bottom of the screen shows the DNS migration status and the configured DNS forwarders. Here you can define the DNS servers to which SambaBox forwards queries for external domain names it cannot resolve:

  • add forwarder: Adds a new DNS forwarder IP address.

  • remove forwarder: Removes an added DNS forwarder address.

If no forwarder is defined, no dns forwarders set is displayed.
